We sent out a survey to NYC residents asking a few questions gauging public awareness on this issue.

Question 1: Do you have a personal connection of being close to someone who has a disability, or do you work with someone who has a disability?

Question 2: Do you notice a lack of accessible subway entrances and exits around the city?

Out of our survey respondents, it was stated that the lack of noticeably accessible subway entrances and exits makes it very difficult for disabled individuals to get around their own city. They may experience issues ranging from making it on time to a doctor’s appointment or getting into their apartment after a social gathering. Thus, it becomes hard for a disabled individual in New York City to regularly utilize public transportation. As a result, disabled individuals may be forced to pay higher fees for other services. This has a very strong negative impact upon the lives of many people whose mobility has become severely limited. A survey respondent mentioned that it is rare for them to see a subway entrance that is accessible by ramp or elevator, which may make it even harder for someone who needs these services to travel or commute. Overall, this makes it much more difficult for disabled individuals to travel easily from place to place, and it can be isolating as well. This respondent stated that the city desperately needs to do something to address this issue. When it comes to how the city could improve on this issue, it’s stated that the city could build more accessible structures including more elevators and ramps. The city could reduce architectural barriers and better integrate transportation systems in order to reduce the need for multiple entries and exits for each subway station. The city could implement better procedures that make seats and entrances more accessible. Not every resident of New York City has the privilege of using a car or other modes of transportation, so more support needs to be in place for these individuals. Currently, only 27% of the city’s stations are fully accessible, and this number needs to increase drastically. There need to be more functioning elevators and more funds allocated to the NYC Transportation Department.
